Wombat Flat Native Forest Reserve

About: Wombat Flat Native Forest Reserve is within the Comaum Forest Reserve. It adjoins the the south-east corner of Glen Roy Conservation Park.

Where is it?: The reserve is about 14km north-east of Coonawarra.

History: This reserve (formerly known as Head Quarters Scrub) takes its name from the adjoining property which contains an inter-dunal flat (Kanawinka Fault Line) which historically supported a large population of wombats1. Sections 316, 317 and 318 in the Hundred of Comaum were proclaimed a Forest Reserve on 6 April 19382 and Section 273 was proclaimed on 6 December 19393. On 29 May 1975 these sections were proclaimed as part of the Comaum Forest Reserve4. These sections Portions of Sections 273, 316, 317, 318 and 366 were proclaimed as Wombat Flat Native Forest Reserve on 15 March 20015. On 17 October 2012 they became Allotments 214, 215 and 217 (Deposited Plan 89482)4.

Habitat: The habitat is mainly Open Woodland with Brown Stringybark (Eucalyptus baxter). Understorey plants include Heath Tea-tree (Leptospermum myrsinoides) and Bracken (Pteridium esculentum).

Total Species Recorded to Date: 62 (non-passerines 19, passerines 43)

Common Species: Superb Fairywren, Crimson Rosella, White-browed Scrubwren, Grey Shrikethrush.

Less Common Species: Red-browed Finch, Brown Thornbill, Little Wattlebird
