Lawari Conservation Park

Where is it?: Lawari Conservation Park is located at the eastern end of Hindmarsh Island, near the Murray Mouth at Goolwa. It covers important wetlands containing a diverse array of habitats that support threatened fish and water bird species.

Landscape Management Region: Hills and Fleurieu

History: This park was proclaimed on 21 March 2017 and  comprises two former grazing properties, purchased with assistance from the Commonwealth’s National Reserve System Program for inclusion into the protected area system. 

Lawari is the Ngarrindjeri word for Cape Barren Goose. 

Habitat: Over the past few years thousands of shrubs and trees have been planted on the former grazing lands. Along the edges of the waterways Swamp Paper-bark (Melaleuca halmaturorum) can be found.

Total Species Recorded to Date: 106 (non-passerines 69, passerines 37)

Common Species: Cape Barren Geese, Grey Teal, Australian White Ibis, White-faced Heron, Whiskered Tern, Singing Honeyeater

Less Common Species: Musk Duck, Great Crested Grebe, Spotless Crake, Elegant Parrot, Golden-headed Cisticola
