Eden Hills

Where is it?: Eden Hills is a southern suburb of Adelaide between Blackwood and the plains. It is bounded by Shepherds Hill Road, Mill Terrace and a line east to Watiparinga Reserve. It follows the northern boundary of the reserve to Gloucester Avenue, then south to and along the southern boundary to the south-west tip. From here south to the Adelaide-Belair railway line and following the railway line until it passes under Shepherds Hill Road.

History: In 1838 a Land Grant for Section 35 South was taken up by Captain William Detmar Cook of the ship ‘Eden’ for his three daughters and son Henry Gordon Cook. They built a house still standing in Kinedena Ave. The first subdivision by Ferry, Moore and Wallman took place on 1883 with streets named after the syndicate’s pastoral interests (Pekina, Wilpena etc.). In 1914 Ashby and Saunders promoted land sales in the ‘mountain suburb’ of Eden Hills.

Total Species Recorded to Date: 123 (non-passerines 59, passerines 64)

Common Species: Adelaide Rosella, Rainbow Lorikeet, New Holland Honeyeater, Red Wattlebird, Noisy Miner Australian Magpie, Magpielark

Less Common Species: Australian Hobby, Red-rumped Parrot, White-naped Honeyeater, Little Wattlebird, Brown Thornbill, Red-browed Finch
