Hacks Lagoon Conservation Park

Where is it?: Hacks Lagoon Conservation Park is 20km S of Naracoorte adjoining the north-eastern section of Bool Lagoon Gamer Reserve.

Landscape Management Region: Limestone Coast

History: Section 249 was proclaimed as  a Fauna Reserve on 8 June 1967.  On 27 April 1972 Sections 373, 379, 382 and 283 were added and the area re-proclaimed as Hacks Lagoon Conservation Park. Section 372 was added on 4 November 1993.

Habitat: At certain times and for long periods there may be no water. The following habitat types are present

  • Tall Shrubland – Swamp Paperbark (Melaleuca halmaturorum ssp. halmaturorum)
  • Sedgeland – Cutting Grass (Gahnia trifida), Thatching Grass (G. filum)
  • Grassland – Common Reed (Phragmites australis)
  • Grassland – Emu-grass (Distichlis distichophylla), Salt Couch (Sporobolus virginicus), Phalaris (Phalaris aquatica) and Paradox Canary-grass (P. paradoxa)
  • Floating waterplants Herbland – Water-ribbons (Triglochin procerum), Millfoil (Myriophyllum spp.), Pond-weed (Potamogeton spp.)
  • Open water

Total Species Recorded to Date: 111 (non-passerines 72, passerines 39)

Common Species: Pacific Black Duck, Australian White Ibis, Swamp Harrier, Superb Fairywren, Australian Magpie, Willie Wagtail

Less Common Species: Buff-banded Rail, Spotted Harrier, Red Wattlebird, Southern Emuwren, Striated Fieldwren, Restless Flycatcher
