Jupiter Creek Gold Diggings, Echunga

Where is it?: These goldfields are off Rubbish Dump Road, c. 4.5 km W of Echunga.

Natural Resources Management Region: Natural Resources Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges

History: These diggings produced ~930 kg of gold, mainly between 1868 and 1871. Gold was last mined in the 1930’s. The diggings are a part of Kuitpo Forest Reserve and are on the State Heritage Register.

Habitat: The vegetation is very much disturbed as a result of mining activities. It is mostly Open Low Woodland with South Australian Blue Gum (Eucalyptus leucoxylon), Messmate Stringybark (E. obliqua) and Manna Gum (E. viminalis ssp. viminalis). The understory is much reduced but includes Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha), Varnish Wattle (A. verniciflua) and Holly Flat-pea (Platylobium obstusangulum)

Total Species Recorded to Date: 63 (non-passerines 14, passerines 39)

Common Species: Adelaide Rosella, White-throated Treecreeper, Superb Fairywren, Crescent Honeyeater, Australian Magpie, Black-winged Currawong

Less Common Species: Striated Thornbill, White-browed Babbler, White-winged Chough, Red-browed Finch
